This week, being our first week, was mostly about getting back into the swing of things. I’m glad that I made it to the first meeting, because I almost skipped it having just gotten off another class, and also thinking that the setup of this class would be similar to the others I’ve taken in the program. I’ve been very busy with subsistence activities this week also, which made it a little difficult – berry picking, packing moose meat and white fish. Thank goodness for the flexibility that distance education has to offer, as we read about this week because I sure needed that.
In our reading this week we learned about how distance learning has evolved since it was first created in the 1970’s I believe it was. That’s really innovative, especially with the limited technology at the time. I must say, it was a little difficult for me to pinpoint what the essential question was really asking. I felt like it was a really open ended question, but it may be my rustiness after taking a break over the summer (now I know how the kids feel when they get back to school in the fall). I thought right from the start that the success of a distance education class will have the same or similar requirements necessary as compared with a face-to-face experience. For the most part, I found that to be true. Good planning (including objectives), structure, and communication are all essential for a beneficial experience with distance education. It was interesting reading a couple of other responses, more specifically – Genevieve’s and Dan’s. In reading their responses it clarified for me the essential question for the week and important points stated in the textbook. They both pointed out the need for structure and dialogue. Theresa also pointed this out, however, I felt like her and I came from a more linear perspective on the assignment (if that makes sense). Maybe we came from the same point of view. I was glad to have read the others writing because I feel like it really answered the essential question for me. I don’t think that I can say the same about me helping them in the same way.
