Dan brought up some interesting points this week. He mentioned the NetGen’s differences in learning and communicating compared to previous generations. This change as a result of growing up with the current technology has created the question, what is the teacher’s role now and at what point does rote memorization take a back seat? This got me thinking that there will always be a need for rote memorization for certain subject areas, math being a huge one. Students need to know their simple math facts. They also need to know how to spell simple words to be functional. I think kids need to be able to follow rules and guidelines, which in itself is a life lesson.
This week Genevieve mentioned, “Online learning through the use of technology will make learning an independent, personal activity.” I think with the number of courses being offered online now, people do have the opportunity to take what they’re interested in. For example, this semester I’m taking a reading class also through UAS to learn more about teaching reading, something I’m interested in. Oprah’s Lifeclass is a huge one that is free and includes people around the globe. I think her Lifeclasses and Meditation classes are great example of MOOCs. They’re free and open to anyone who is interested. They include thousands of people at a time. I would imagine that options will only continue to grow and people will continue to be a part of things online that they’re interested in. Completing this week’s lesson was actually a little difficult for me because I felt pretty tired that day and had a lot of trouble focusing. I thought my ideas weren’t really making sense and hoped they would be alright once I rested and took a look at them again. I’m glad to see that they did make sense. :0 One huge idea that I got out of class this week was that the NetGen has grown up in the digital age and Knowledge Age and their learning style is very different than the traditional style. We know that they are natural collaborators because of this. I do know also, that Yup’iks in my community are still lagging behind in this theory for a few reasons.
